What Sealcoating Does for Your Driveway
- Keeps water out. Water that gets into blacktop freezes, expands and breaks it apart. Sealer closes the surface.
- Blocks the sun. Sunlight dries out the binder that holds blacktop together, which is why an unsealed driveway fades to gray and turns brittle.
- Resists gas, oil and salt. Drips from cars and winter road salt attack unprotected pavement.
- Restores the color. A sealed driveway goes back to a deep, even black.
- Costs far less than paving. Regular sealcoating is the least expensive way to get more years out of a driveway.
Hand Brushed, Never Sprayed
We apply STAR-SEAL sealer by hand with brushes. Brushing works the sealer into the surface and into small cracks, and it goes on thick. Sprayed sealer goes on thin, so it wears off sooner, and overspray can end up on garage doors, walkways and lawns. Not all sealcoat products are the same either. The material sold in pails at home centers is not the same as a professional grade sealer, and it will not last as long.
How We Sealcoat a Driveway
- Look it over. We check for potholes, broken edges and failed areas. Sealer protects sound pavement, but it does not rebuild broken pavement, so those spots are hot patched first.
- Clean the surface. Dirt, debris and vegetation along the edges are cleared so the sealer bonds to the pavement.
- Brush on the sealer. STAR-SEAL is applied by hand, edge to edge, and cut in neatly along garage doors, walkways and borders.
- Let it dry. The driveway is blocked off while the sealer dries, and we will tell you when you can walk and drive on it again.
How to Choose a Sealcoating Company
- Ask whether the sealer is brushed or sprayed, and what product is used.
- Be careful of anyone promising that sealcoating will last 5, 6 or 7 years. That is an empty promise. Under normal conditions a driveway should be resealed every two years.
- Ask for a written quote, proof of insurance, and a local address. Reitman Sealcoating, Inc. is fully licensed and insured, BBB A+ rated, and based at 135 West Hills Road in Huntington Station.

Long Island Sealcoating Questions
How long does sealcoating last?
Under normal weather conditions, plan on resealing every two years. A driveway that is 10 years old and was never sealed is dry and porous, so it may need to be sealed again after one year, and every two years after that.
Should I seal a brand new driveway right away?
No. New blacktop has to cure first. We recommend the first coat one year after paving, so the sealer bonds properly.
Is brushed sealer better than sprayed sealer?
We believe so, which is why we hand brush every job. Brushed sealer goes on thick and is worked into the surface and into small cracks. Sprayed sealer goes on thin and does not last as long.
Do you offer neighborhood discounts?
Yes. If we can do several driveways on one street the same day, we save on travel and pass the savings on. Call (631) 549-5455 and mention your neighbors.
