What Blacktop Is

Blacktop is the everyday Long Island name for asphalt pavement: crushed stone and sand bound together with asphalt cement, delivered hot, spread, and compacted with a roller before it cools. It is the most common driveway surface on Long Island, and for good reasons.

Why Long Island Homeowners Choose Blacktop

  • It handles freezing and thawing. Blacktop is flexible, so it moves with the ground through a Long Island winter better than rigid surfaces do.
  • It is repairable. A damaged section can be cut out and hot patched without replacing the whole driveway.
  • It can be renewed. Sealcoating restores the deep black color and protects the surface from sun, salt, gas and oil.
  • Snow melts faster on it. The dark surface absorbs heat from the sun, which helps after a storm.
  • It is ready quickly. A blacktop driveway is back in use far sooner than poured concrete.
  • It pairs well with stone. A Belgian block border or apron gives blacktop a finished, high end look.

How to Choose a Blacktop Company

A blacktop driveway is a real investment, and the quality of the job is mostly decided by things you cannot see once it is finished. Before you hire anyone, ask:

  • Is the quote in writing? It should say what is being removed, what base work is included, and what is being paved.
  • Are they licensed and insured? Reitman Sealcoating, Inc. is fully licensed and insured and is BBB A+ rated.
  • What happens to the base? Paving over soft ground or a failed base is the most common shortcut, and it is the reason new driveways crack early.
  • Where will the water go? The driveway has to be graded to drain away from your house and garage.
  • Who is on the job? Bob Reitman supervises our work personally.
  • Do they have a local address and a track record? Bob Reitman has been in the trade since 1977 and we work from our yard at 135 West Hills Road in Huntington Station. See our Testimonials and Photo Gallery.

Long Island Blacktop Questions

Is blacktop the same as asphalt?

Yes. On Long Island the two words describe the same pavement: stone and sand bound with asphalt cement, laid hot and compacted. Blacktop is simply the everyday name for it.

Is blacktop or concrete better for a Long Island driveway?

Blacktop is the more common choice here because it flexes through freezing and thawing, it can be repaired in sections, and it can be renewed with sealcoating. Road salt is also hard on concrete surfaces.

Why does new blacktop turn gray?

Sun and weather slowly dry out the surface and wear away the black binder, exposing the color of the stone. Sealcoating restores the black color and protects the surface. See Color of Blacktop Driveways.
