Match the Repair to the Problem
Most asphalt problems have a right sized fix. Paying for more than you need wastes money, and paying for less than you need means paying twice. This is how we match the work to what we see.
- Faded, dry, gray surface with hairline cracks. The pavement is sound but unprotected. Sealcoating, brushed on by hand, restores the color, fills small surface cracks and keeps water out.
- Potholes, a broken edge, or a sunken spot. The damage is local. The area is cut out and hot patched with new asphalt, then the driveway is sealed so everything matches.
- A worn surface over a solid base. When the whole surface is tired but the driveway is still flat and drains properly, it can be resurfaced with a new layer of asphalt.
- Connected cracking everywhere, standing water, patches that keep failing. These are signs the base has failed. The honest fix is removal and new paving.
Why Early Asphalt Repair Saves Money
Pavement fails from the bottom up. Water gets in through a crack and reaches the base. On Long Island the temperature crosses the freezing point again and again every winter, and each time the water freezes it expands and lifts the pavement. Traffic then breaks the unsupported asphalt, and a crack becomes a pothole. A small repair this year is almost always cheaper than the larger one the same spot will need after another winter. Driveways and Parking Lots
We repair and pave residential driveways and commercial parking lots across Nassau and Suffolk counties. For parking lots we handle pothole repair, resurfacing, sealcoating and striping, and we can work in sections so the lot stays open. For driveways, ask about adding a Belgian block border or apron while the paving is being done.
Asphalt Repair Questions
Can my asphalt driveway be repaired instead of replaced?
Usually, yes. If the damage is in a few spots and the rest of the pavement is solid, hot patching and sealcoating fix it for a fraction of the cost of repaving. Replacement is needed when the base under the pavement has failed.
What is the best way to fix a pothole?
A hot patch. The damaged area is cut out, the base is repaired if it has failed, and the hole is filled with hot asphalt and compacted. Bagged cold patch from a home center is only a temporary fix.
Will sealcoating fix the cracks in my driveway?
Hand brushed sealer fills small surface cracks and keeps water out of them. Wide cracks, potholes and broken areas need to be repaired with hot asphalt before the driveway is sealed.
When should asphalt repairs be done?
As early as possible, and ideally before winter. Every freeze and thaw makes an open crack or pothole larger, so a repair that waits until spring is a bigger repair.
